Slide Issue

We have a 2006 Haulmark Toterhome that is used to haul a race trailer. We have been having problems with the rear slide not running in/out properly. Previously it was the shear pins and replaced those about 6 months ago and now we are having same issue of it not running in/out unassisted. It is a gear type.

This morning I pulled the 12v motor off and inspected all the gears (normal wear and one tiny piece missing maybe 1/16" on motor gear). I did however notice that the bushings on the shaft that connects left and right tracks of slide do appear to be worn and have play. I am trying to get it sorted this week as racing season is over and the bossman uses it for family vacations as well.

It has also been mangling one shear pin in particular. Could this be an alignment issue that is making ot try to pull it in whopperjawed and bending shear pin? Its as if something has it bound up causing clutch to ratchet making it need assistance in and out. I do have it hooked to shore power with good batteries and other slide operates as advertised so unless there is a wiring issue to motor I dont see that causing it. Any help is appreciated!

  • I finally got someone at shop to run it in and out while i watched from underneath. it appears as if the bracket that holds the motor on is moving causing it to slip. it will slip and if i grab motor and hold it from moving it will work properly. has anyone seen this? id hate to fab up a bracket and rigid mount the motor if it will cause premature failure on motor by binding it up
  • its kind of hard to tell to be honest. the way it is designed it has a square tube (3"x3") with teeth welded to the bottom and that square tube rides in a channel that is welded to frame of toterhome with the motor attached to it. sorry to make it complicated, but im outside of my element on this one.

perhaps that steel channel the slide rides is is warped or not square. its not insanely difficult to move with motor disconnected, but maybe the silicone lube will help?
  • What does the under side of the slide look like? Have the rollers eaten into the slide?
  • The slide issues i have experienced have been due to gunk on the slide rails. I thought the rear slide motor failed but it was shutting itself off on the internal motor protector. On my motorhome I removed the bed and plywood pedestal cover and cleaned the rails with brake kleen and acetone. I applied a light silicone coat and let it dry. Being in dusty conditions, I visit the desert a lot, it requires maintenance.
sounds like your issue may be more complicated. See you at the races.
