solar "wing" on drivers side

Hi,

I've moved to being full time in the RV.

I'm in the first stages of planning a solar "wing" for the driver's side of my RV. I want to hinge at the top so I can tilt when stopped.

I'm open to all ideas about doing this. I will probably use MPPT with the panels in series.

I'm 100 inches wide so I want to keep it "thin".

I'll have to avoid the furnace/water heater so there will be a gap.

The panels will double as awnings for the bedroom and dinette windows.

I see you are going through with covering your customer route for piano tuning through this coming winter season.

Days are getting short here in Minnesota (shorter in your area). I still cannot see how you can possibly use the MH without winterizing the water system.

I winterized two weeks ago continue to camp winterized. No big deal! No need to waste extra heat and energy to try and keep exposed plumbing from freezing and bursting.

I hope you have some backup plans for getting shore-power, etc. along the route.

If you run into problems like Black Hills in S.D. you will be in deep trouble.

Good luck. You will need it.

I wouldnt worry about Don. If you ever get the chance to see his rig, it will amaze you! He is set up very well indeed to handle severe low temps and he has a generator that gives him all the juice he needs. The wing idea sound s great Don.....just need to finalize a spec and go for it. Even in the winter you'd get quite a bit of power from those panels.
  • Don,

Were you thinking of folding the panels flat over the roof (upside down) when in motion, or dropping down along the sides (right side out)?

  • Hi Don

I know you have been looking to do this for quite a while. I think the best place to start is the forum member that has them on the side of his class C.

The good news is that big panels keep getting smaller. The last 270w panel I looked at was the same size as my 220w mono and much smaller than the 230w poly.

  • It'll be interesting to see what you come up with, so do remember to post pictures. My only advice is to make sure you have a secure hold-down on it. You definitely do not want to have something like that flapping in the breeze as you roll down the road.
