50% relative humidity is generally the max comfortable. At least 30% is ideal.
Yes, a 1/2 gallon in 8 hours isn't going to do much. I used to have two large floor model humidifiers in my office. I went through two, 2 gallon buckets of water a day and that was just for my office. For a house you need larger floor model humidifiers that hold about four gallons of water and fill them once a day.
