Never seen it as a life threatening issue.
Unless of course a pacemaker enters the picture. Static electricity won't kill the unit but it CAN play nasty with the settings. So sez Boston Scientific the maker of my pacemaker.
Track rig is correct. It takes a LOT OF WATER to humidify a house.
Cold aerosol is a mold and bacteria breeding ground. Add bleach just like you were purifying drinking water, but not cavalier over-dosing.
I contracted pneumonia staying at a friend's place in Nevada in the winter of 1980 from cold water humidification. So did my friends. Hospital-stay grade pneumonia. St. Mary's in Reno. I was not amused.
But then I had a radiant heater at home so I used to set a 5 gallon metal bucket on top. But the bleach cold water thing will work OK.
