Stick House Tehermostast Ques?

It seems to me that the stick home thermostat is erratic in it's on/off cycling of the air conditioner. This is a heat pump.

So today i set it to off and let the temp in the house build to 75. I then turned the air on to a setting of 73. I stood and watched the room temp indicator on the stat due to earlier suspicions. After a while it jumped from 75 to 73 without ever showing 74.

Is it possible for the thing to do that and be functioning normal - ie not need replacing?

  • Are you cold and don't want to be. Turn up the temp. Are you warm and wish to be cooler. Turn the temp down. Forget the numbers. As an installer of electric baseboard heat the thermos usually had "warm--Warmer. No degrees. Occasionally we would come across a thermo with numbers and people would want that setting to match a thermometer they had next to it. Forget the numbers and be comfortable.
  • Many thermostats are controlled by a "time proportional" algorithm, not a deadband.

Many thermostats will "cheat" by displaying the room temp is at setpoint when it is just close; makes you think its running perfectly!!

You need to find the setup for your stat, and make sure it's configured correctly for a heat pump operation.

  • Some digital thermostats can have range and "turn on" delay adjusted. You may be able to adjust yours. I've found this on some programmable thermostats.
  • WOW! You let the temps rise to 75? Ours never gets set below 78 in summer. As mentioned, ours is a programmable thermostat by "White", and it only reads in even numbers, or odd numbers depending on how you set it.
  • A lot of thermostats have a 2 degree span in them...ie will turn ON or OFF within 2 degrees of set point (anticipation factor)

BUT the house didn't cool from 75 down to 73...it had to reach 74 and then cool to 73

Your t-stat should have shown a gradual decrease in temp from 75 to 74 to 73

Is this an old analog type or digital t-stat?
Analog.....normal.Just check that it is level
    Digital.....should have only a 0.5 degree span
