Sticking Toilet Ball - Thetford Type II

On our last trip we noticed that the toilet ball is not closing smoothly after flushing. The current fix is to lift up on the pedal + the ball closes for the seal. From those of you who have done it, is it time for the toilet ball replacement kit? If yes, does the toilet have to be removed to do this job? Our rig is almost 5 years old. We have already replaced the water valve assembly. Thank you, for your assistance.

  • Have you cleaned the seal/ball?

Hold ball open and then using your hand thoroughly clean the seal (top/bottom/sides) flexing it as you clean it. Clean the ball

Then lubricate the seal thoroughly again using your hand---plumbers grease or even olive oil. Rub it into the seal.

If ball still hangs up.....get the kit and replace.

My toilet is going on 8 yrs.........FTnd for 7yrs. So it has had a lot of use.
    Still original and works great.
Cleaning seal and lubricating is simple routine maintenance
  • About half the time mine leaks all the water out. I haven't fixed it because it doesn't seem to cause any problems - like odors.
  • On my type II there are 2 screws in the back holding the bowl down to the pedestal. Shut off water, remove waterline, and lift bowl off the pedestal. The ball itself is attatched to the pedestal. My ball was OK. Just the gasket needed to be replaced. I did have to buy the whole kit because nobody had the gasket by itself. Kit was $26. Easy to change. Just lay the gasket on the ball and set bowl back in place.
  • What brand toilet?
On my thetford porcelin traveler it is a simple job to take it apart, remove the seals, clean and grease them
