Strange sound coming from Cummins 5.9 ISB

Question

I have a 2004 Bounder diesel on a Freightliner with a 5.9 Cummins with 95K. About 3K or 4K miles ago, I started hearing a strange noise when I accelerate hard or I'm on the exhaust brake. Sounds like it is coming from the turbo. It is more of a whine. Has anyone heard of this? Click on the Noise below to hear it, sorry for the wind noise. I was full throttle, then exhaust brake a couple of times.

YEP........that is some noise.....WIND is all I hearIf turbo 'whines' it is probably the 'silencer ring' has come loose.Roll coal folks remove them so that turbo really sings out

Soiunds like an air leak in the charged side of the turbo. Could be a bad or loose boot.

A TipIf you decide to tackle the "fix" yourself and it is within the turbo system I can tell you from experience with the NTC 855 Cummins that the repair is a ballet of sequential steps with a torque wrench. Even torquing fasteners requires a diagram and a torque wrench.
