Strange sound coming from Cummins 5.9 ISB

I have a 2004 Bounder diesel on a Freightliner with a 5.9 Cummins with 95K. About 3K or 4K miles ago, I started hearing a strange noise when I accelerate hard or I'm on the exhaust brake. Sounds like it is coming from the turbo. It is more of a whine. Has anyone heard of this? Click on the Noise below to hear it, sorry for the wind noise. I was full throttle, then exhaust brake a couple of times.

If you decide to tackle the "fix" yourself and it is within the turbo system I can tell you from experience with the NTC 855 Cummins that the repair is a ballet of sequential steps with a torque wrench. Even torquing fasteners requires a diagram and a torque wrench.

Soiunds like an air leak in the charged side of the turbo. Could be a bad or loose boot.
  • YEP........that is some noise.....WIND is all I hear

If turbo 'whines' it is probably the 'silencer ring' has come loose.

Roll coal folks remove them so that turbo really sings out
