There are several blind nuts available. A BN is a threaded insert that goes into a wall or through something relatively thin. A jack nut comes to mind as like a molly it has three or four legs that fold out around the hole in which they are inserted.
Google Blind nuts, Jack Nuts and threaded inserts, you'll find one that works for you.
Of course you could just drill it out a little larger and re-thread it to 5/16.
