Stainless nuts are tough enough for this and won't corrode.
Whatever the size choose SAE FINE THREAD nutserts.
Nutserts have a near insane amount of gripping strength. At one time I had to nutsert into overly soft old marine plywood. I removed everything then sprayed Varathane into the holes until the wood would not accept more. I let it dry for three days and the Varathane seemed to significantly strengthen the soft wood.
Quicksilver's clearance lights and rear tail lamps were all changed to 1/4" x 28 stainless steel nutserts. It sure is nice fitting a seven sixteenths socket to the bolts and having no hassles!
