Taking a Awning off a Motorhome

Well another question for this Newbie! Sorry! We are not sure of the condition of our Awning when we bought the Motorhome ( yes I know we should of checked it out) but we are thinking of taking it off the Motorhome for this first trip down to southern trips from Canada in December. It seems to be twisted in the sliding arms and we can barely get it open anyways. What are the pros and cons of taking off a awning? We can manage to get it off no problem. Just wondering if it will be something we will regret on our trip? I just don't think we will really even take the time to roll it out or use it or be sitting anywhere long enough to use it as my husband would say to me! Lol....just your thoughts are truly appreciated as all your experience helps me alot. Thank You

Highly likely someone will gladly help, followed by a ton of others to help as well.

Next thing you know the camp fire is lit and a bunch of folks are gathered around with drinks, snacks and great conversation.

Before long you have long-term friends that email and send cards at Christmas!

Leave it on there and make like a noobie when you get there and ask for some help or act like you need it/ You will not regret it!

Many years ago my awning fabric tore and I cobbled it together until I got a job at Amazon 4 years ago. I ordered new fabric from JC Whitney and had it delivered to the camp ground.

I struggled with it for a few minutes and then ventured next door to ask if I could borrow the neighbor's ladder. Next thing you know 6 guys are there holding and shifting and adjusting and sliding the lod fabric off and the new fabric on!

The whole time there were lots of stories told and a bunch of laughing (mostly at my expense! In good humor of course) and joking. Before I realized it, working together we had the old fabric off and the new on in no time! Still holding up well today!

I know this is a bit off topic, but in case you're considering removal in part because it's hard to open:

Not exactly sure what you mean by "twisted in the sliding arms", but if the arms/fabric look cockeyed, it may be that the fabric has shifted in the channel it slides into. Everything has to be square to work properly- when deployed, arms should be at right angles to the body of the rig. If the fabric shifts a few inches, it throws the whole thing off. The fabric is supposed to have retaining screws to keep it from moving, but they can fall out and even be forgotten at time of install. If this appears to be the case with yours, you can adjust it by opening the awning all the way without extending the braces, then relieve tension on the fabric by propping the roller on a ladder or something. Then tug at the fabric at whichever end of the rail it needs to go until everything's square again.
  • Have it done you will want one sooner or later...I would take it to have it taken off and new one put back on. Consider a power awning, some like and some do not. I have the power and use it more often then the man. one, also nice to be able to roll it up from inside if a night time storm comes up.
  • I've taken one off and stored it in the garage and didn't miss it a bit. It's a little bit of a selling point when the awning is like new, come selling time. Other than that, nothing. Craig
  • It's really a PITA to get them off and back on, if you do not know how to release the spring tension you can get hurt.

First step, is to flip the release lever and pull the awning out a few inches. then pull the rubber cord that holds the fabric in the slot attached to the camper. then two bolts and it is off.

If any one flips the release lever while the awning is off it will spin like it was trying to retract the awning, be careful
  • To me, RVing just wouldn't be the same if I didn't have an awning.
