Testing electric at home base

Just moved my TT to my house today from my storage. ( first tow with new ecoboost !! Nice )

Anyway, I am plugged up to 110 via a little black plug converter ( steps down from 30 to 15 ), and using a 15' contractor grade extension cord attached to TT 30A. Nothing but lights on 110 circuit now.

1- Is it ok to test the systems, one at a time, ( except a/c )? I am getting ready for a trip and TT has been sitting about 3 months.
Test these things: hot water heater ( 6gal, 8800btu ), microwave, frig. I will fill HWH before testing if ok to test.

2-just bought a new progressive ems. Is it ok to hook it up under these conditions? Just want to see how it works while I have time to spare.

Probably silly questions, just don't want to hurt anything just before 1st trip in 2014. My biggest concern is the water heater.
Thanks
  • Make sure the water heater is filled with water before you do any testing of same.
  • Let the battery charge a few hours. Then yes you can connect the ems and check one thing at a time.... including the air conditioner. Worst case the breaker opens, turn item off, reset breaker and move to the next item.

Why this statement? Lights should be 12v.

Do you have an AC/DC (120/12) volt meter? Have you plugged something into the extension cord? Can you test the power after adding the adapter? How do you know if any 120 is getting into the trailer?

You have nothing you can't run alone on the 15amp feed.
You have almost nothing that you can run with anything else on the 15 amp feed.
So, shut everything down - And I Mean Everything.
This includes the converter. Run on the housebank for the tests.
Power up one, test it and shut it down.
When everything have been tested and confirmed, now power up the converter and relax.

And occasionally touch that adapter and check if it is getting hot.
Warm is OK but if hot throw it away.
  • Yes you can test the AC as well. Just turn everything else off. IF it should pull more juice you than have going to it. It will just trip a breaker. No big deal. We run our AC all the time at home

  • Is your water heater equipped with a 120 volt element?
If yes, you should be able to test through the adapter if no other heavy loads are on and the converter has charged the batteries to a high level of charge.
    Turn refer to gas.
EMS system or did you get a surge protector?
