Toilet Roof Vent Replacement Needed

The plastic cap on the roof vent is broken.
Can I just replace the cap itself, or do I need to remove and replace the entire unit?

Are they universal or do I need a specific make / model / brand?

Also, if I do have to replace the entire unit, what kind of caulk or sealant do I need to use to waterproof the screws / bolts?

Thanks.

Regards,
Steve.

  • I'm in the process of changing mine now and adding fans to the vents without them. It appears the sizes are the same, but there are at least two different styles of caps and probably more. Even Ventline has two caps that are the same size but have different hinges on them just to make the job more fun.

Take the screen off, look up on the sides of the vent and there should be a mfg and model # sticker. If it's not on the vent you need to change, check the others.

Since you haven't done this before it will probably mean a couple of trips up and down the ladder to change it. Go up there and take your phone or camera and take some pictures. What you want to take pictures of is the hinge area. Also take some pictures of the hinges on both sides from the ends of the hinges.

Then go to YouTube and put in something like Change RV Vent Cover. You'll find one there for your style of vents. Then take the cover off and go down to an RV store. They're all probably getting UV damaged so you might as well change them all at once.

  • I believe they are a standard size. You can just replace the cap and it is quite easy.

I prefer the wind van type and have them on mine. But they are about 2x the price of just the cap type.

  • Eons ago I had a broken bathroom van cover. IIRR there were 3 models of covers available, I took the broken one in and matched it up. Fairly easy to replace.
