Turning off AC stops power to 12v buss????

I'm not an electrician and have found an interesting problem... Wife woke up and turned off the AC fan (used to sleep in noisy areas) all 12v items now won't work. Checked the buss and it's not getting but a trickle--not popped but a trickle. Pull a fuse and the light glows a dim red. Can't find a short. Wires are tight. Tried again 5 hours later (daylight) nothing. All 120 items work-not 12v. Come home that evening everything works. Full power to the buss!!!! Any ideas????? I'm not an electrician so I was just thinking of replacing the whole thing inverter and all.

  • Probably the self-resetting circuit breaker in the situation here. As too much current is put through it, it will open. Allowed to cool off, it will reset. I would suspect that the fan switch is being naughty.
  • More info needed. What RV do you have? What is model of inverter/charger or converter? Have you checked the 120v CB for the inverter/charger or converter? Have you checked the CB on the inverter/charger or converter? What is a trickle?

    Converter, not inverter. ;)

It's difficult at best to diagnose without actually laying eyes on a situation but my guess would be that your converter is failing and caused the resettable circuit breaker that is wired to the positive terminal of your battery to open, in which case there'd be no power being supplied by the battery and no power from the (presumably failed) converter. These are auto retting CBs so it's not surprising it may have later reset once it cooled down, allowing the battery to once again power the trailer. As for the 120 vac circuits, keep in mind that the converter has no bearing on those circuits - the fact that the breakers for these circuits are mounted on the converter's front panel is merely a matter of convenience - i.e. the converter could be completely toast yet the 120 vac would still work. My suggestion - since you've said yourself you're "not an electrician" you'd be wise to have a dealer tech who is qualified take a look as you could easily make this situation far worse by not knowing what you're doing.
