Upgrading the stereo system

I have a vintage 1998 stereo in my TT. (I am guessing that is because it is also that old.)

I am looking for a new stereo that:
runs off 12v
has excellent radio reception
is compatible with iPods via USB
also has an AUX so I can hook a tv to it and have surround.

What do you suggest? Will any ole' car stereo with those features be enough?
  • Dang! I forgot all about Crutchfield. This site is worth a million bucks. Thanks guys.

Go buy a JBL Flip 4
A full-featured waterproof portable Bluetooth speaker with surprisingly powerful sound. Will charge on 12Volt or 110. Will last 8 hours on a charge. Unbelievable sound.
    $99.95 each

Now get the app for your phone Spotify.
You will have the best sounding stereo and there will not be a song that you cannot get. I love mine and you can use it any ware. Not just limited to your TT. If you do this let me know what you think.

Then it is one more think to store/forget. I want something mounted in the TT.

  • My old thing is mounted in a cabinet.

Sounds like it is time for me to do some stereo shopping.
  • I replaced the garbage that came with my trailer with a JVC DIN mount unit, that included a front and rear aux port, as well as USB and bluetooth. It also has an HD tuner. Then I added a "real" antenna to the roof of the trailer, as mine previously just had a wire laying in the rafters. Reception is excellent.

I converted and routed my TV digital audio to the rear aux port. Added a self powered subwoofer (under the couch), and an amplifier for the speakers I also added.

My little system rocks and is great for movies too.
  • I went with a Pioneer AVH-X3800BHS. I added a Sirius/XM tuner to it. I replaced the ceiling speakers with Kicker DSC6504 (thin) speakers. The Pioneer is bluetooth compatible with many devices. It interfaces with both Apple and Android devices. There are apps to run that interface your phone with the unit so you can pull up local events, find locations, etc. on the stereo. It has DVD capabilities, so I can play DVD videos and route that video to my 28" LED TV. I can also play movies on my iPad, and route the video via HDMI to the TV, then route the audio through the stereo. The Sirius/XM tuner integrates well with the system. The receiver also has HD radio, can interface with Spotify, and other music services. I've added a Samlex 150 watt pure-sine inverter that lets me run the TV and Dish receiver and antenna off of 12V as well. Once I knew what I wanted, ordering off Amazon was cheaper than Crutchfield and other mail-order stereo stores.

I used a piece of King Starboard for the mounting fascia. Pioneer sells a double din generic mounting kit that works well. I also added a 12V/5V charging station with a voltage meter that allows me to keep small devices charged up. A picture is below. I'm quite pleased with this set-up. I recently added 200W of solar, and now my entertainment can go anywhere.

BTW, I installed this in a 1990 Prowler 24C, a very common model for Fleetwood from the late 1980s up to about 1998.

and another BTW, this thing has hands-free Siri, and hands free phone support... that feature works well, too.

and still more... the USB port in the middle connects directly to the stereo. So, your older iPod will work just fine. I've noticed all the app features work best when the phone is plugged into this port. There are some limitations when you use the phone over bluetooth (at least my iPhone 6 works best when plugged in). AND, any car stereo with video must have a reverse lockout device plugged in so the stereo will always think the trailer is in "park."

If you decide to go this route, I can help with some of the things you need to get and do (if that might be useful).

    Steve

  • X2 on Crutchfield. In fact give them a call and tell them what you are trying to do. They have excellent tech support and excellent customer service. They also have a very liberal return policy and THEY pay of the return shipping.
  • Are you talking about a dash mount or cabinet mount stereo?
A picture of your current stereo or model name would be a great help.
I believe you are wanting to utilize your internal speakers with the television, not true surround sound?
I would look on the Crutchfield website for ideas. You should be able to get a 12V stereo with auxiliary, USB and Bluetooth functionality that is IPOD compatible for between $100 and $150.

I wasn't sure if it really was that simple.
