Do they often work on what they 'believe' to be cold?
IF a line man is workign on what he believes to be a "Cold" (not energeried) wire and finds it is "HOT" (powered) He can be killed and YOU can be charged with his death (manslaughter).
Not often - but what happens if lineman confirms it's cold and someone fires up their generator?
Any time the lineman have worked on the wires near my place, they ground the lines out by connecting a jumper before they touch anything.
Even then, accidents can happen...
Lineman killed by backfeeding generator. - wnjjExplorer II

Well lets ask a lineman. i think locally iffin they go with all the safety precautions the back feed issue will be stopped/precluded/ or something like that to ensure safety :h
Well that legislated the safety problem away. Not! - Dave_H_MExplorer IINot often - but what happens if lineman confirms it's cold and someone fires up their generator?

no, but I had an uncle electrocuted while working on power lines that were supposedly cold. Turns out that it had a 2 way feed on the line and it was live. - ksg5000Explorer

After we returned from evacuating, we were without power for almost 2 days. The house fridge and freezer were still cold when we got back, so I ran an extension cord from the MH generator into the house. I connected a power strip, plugged the fridge in and had a few other outlets available for computers and to recharge cell phones, etc. We also ran a couple loads of wash off the generator. We couldn't run the drier since it is electric.
-Michael - wa8yxmExplorer IIII will add this.. DO NOT under any conditions "Back feed" if you wish to power the house eitehr
1: As one person up above did put in a seperate system for the RV to power (He used an inlet outside the house, he called it a "Male socket" and an outlet inside the house) or put in a proper generator transfer system as I did.
DO NOT BACK FEED
The proper method insures mechanically that you can not connect to both the power mains and the RV at the same time.. ONE MUST be shut off (3 position switch Mains/OFF/Generator, or some other type of lockout that insures only ONE source is active)
IF you have both systems live and power is restored your Generator can be damaged (Totaled) or worse yet catch fire
IF a line man is workign on what he believes to be a "Cold" (not energeried) wire and finds it is "HOT" (powered) He can be killed and YOU can be charged with his death (manslaughter).
DO NOT BACKFEED
Always use a proper isolator/transfer system. - TvovExplorer III had a Generlink installed at my house. Not the cheapest thing to do, but about as idiot proof as you are ever going to get with electricity, and recommended by the electric company for generators - needs to be installed by an electrician to conform to code (as far as I know). It basically plugs into your electric meter. It is a fancy shut off switch with a generator socket. When there is a power outage, the Generlink isolates the house from street power. You plug in your generator, start it up, and you are running off the generator. When street power comes back on, Generlink stops it from feeding your house until you shut down your generator and unplug. Then you are back to normal street power.
