Before going any further I would check for OBD codes which could give an indication of problem component. I had a somewhat similar issue and the OBD code turned out to be the best diagnosis. Mine was a fuel pump relay which was simple to replace and only cost about $12 at NAPA. I was fortunate to have such a simple solution.
