Water heater

Our water heater in our 2011 Rockford Ultralite has given us problems all year. The , dealer told us there is nothing wrong with it, yet it takes as many as 20 times (turning it on and off) to get it to ignite and then it usually kicks out after it has to reheat (like during a shower.) Is this something we can fix ourselves (replace the ignitor maybe?) We're really new to this, it's our first trailer, maybe we're missing something simple?
  • What Brand/Model? Suburban or Atwood......XXXXX?

Spark electrode must be engulfed in main flame to prove it is lit.
When power is sent to spark electrode, power is sent to main gas valve solenoids for 6-8 seconds. When main flame lights a milivolt signal is sent back to control module to 'prove' main flame so power stays on gas valve and keeps it open.

You are getting spark so you are getting power to/thru module SO.......
These are the things to check before even considering the control module.

*Poor/corroded ground connections can cause problems------clean tighten ground connections
*Dirty contacts at plug in connector can cause problem...pull connector off and clean contacts with an eraser
*Spark electrode not being directly in path (engulfed) of main flame....no signal. Adjust so it is engulfed by main flame
*Spark electrode dirty...no signal. Remove and use emery cloth to clean off carbon
*Disrupted gas flow........remove burner tube and clean it out. Remove main gas orifice and clean with alcohol. Make sure burner tube is aligned----straight shot to spark electrode. And check that diffuser on end of burner tube is square with end of tube
*Blockage in combustion/exhaust 'U' tube.......with burner tube and spark electrode removed run a piece of wire thru chamber and then pull a rag back thru too clean out any debris (webs/bests etc.)
  • It could be something as simple as running a bit of sand paper over the little pipe tip (thing) where the gas come out of the hole and the flame starts (whatever that thing is called). Similar thing happened in our stick-house we lived in a few years ago. Turned out that little hole was gunked over. A simple little brush with sand paper and it worked fine, never a problem again.

We did have a similar problem with our refrigerator in our prior camper once. I did the same thing, and it worked fine, never a problem again.

It's such a simple thing to try first. Give it a shot and see what happens. Start simple, then get more complex. If if the electronics, at least eliminate all the minor "possibilities" first.
  • Clean any connections, especially the plug to the control board (usually a black box) and you can pybass the stats and the thermo fuse for testing, if all that doesn't fix it, and even tho your RV is quite young yet, the problem most likely is a defective control board. And tho a control board is not cheap, you can change it yourself. If by chance that did not fix it, (very unlikely) that same board will likely fit the Fridge and water heater too, so just carry for spare.
