Weird Electrical Issue in PUP

I did LOVE to play with BW Magnatek's 775-2 ferroresonant 75 amp unit, playing musical capacitor bias along with Schottky vf rectifier augmentation. Sort of like chopping exhaust pipe to different lengths to fit a pipe organ. The unit was damned near indestructible except for electrolytic capacitor age degradation. Which I guess remains the bane of all power supplies (

Folks, If Mex's description does not give you a clue, Th Magnetek is the bottom of the bottom of the barrel.. And of course the PD 4600 I recommended as an UPGrate... is the very top of the barrel.

So, you're saying that the PD product is prettier than Elanor Roosevelt? :B

Yes Mex. I know. It also had a relay to connect the two "DC" lines together for battery operation. Appears this relay or the power supply itself has failed.

Far as I know (Which I will admit is limited) this was the ONLY line of converters like this that had said relay.. So that's why I'm assuming he might have one..

the magtec has a single pole relay that disconnects the PUP 12v wiring from the battery when pluged into shore power
the scehmatic wiring diagram has been posted several times

the converter is not making any power, it is disconnecting the battery, but it is not making the power it is supposed to to replace the battery
it might be a blow fuse, but it could just just be 'fried' aka burned out

It is the Magnatek 6700. And to clarify, EVERYTHING works when on Battery Power, but when hooked to house power/generator, lights/water pump don't work, but power outlets do.

Turn off the 15A breaker that supplies power to the converter and you should have battery power! If not, find the kill switch and check it out.

A ferroresonant AC to DC converter WITH a 30 watt 3 ohm power resistor as a bleed resistor going to the batteries. Wonderful. A full battery meant 14.7 volts going to the accessories. A discharged battery meant 12.4 volts going to the lights. And BW Magnafart, used the most garbage grade of power caps, multiple ceramic power resistors and no fan cooling. Fred Flintstone grade engineering. Three point seven maximum battery charge rate.

I am guessing you have a Magnetek 6300 Power distribution panel/COnverter...

WHY? Well this converter is kind of unique, it contained both a very slow DUMB type battery charger and a very poor "Converter" for lights and things that did not need "Clean" DC.. A relay (which may have failed) selected BATTERY or CONVERTER supply for the lights. Either the Relay or the high current converter has failed, so you only get lights when the battery is selected.

The solution: If you have this unit get a Progressive Dynamics 4600 series from Best Converters.. Make sure you get the magnetek upgrade kit which includes some jumpers to bypass that flakey relay. your batteries will thank you and ultimately pay for the upgrade by not failing as fast.

Then something that has blown up tries to shake itself loose from a coma but fails. The converter did exactly as expected - utterly failed.

Check the 120vac breaker just for drill. Don't hold your breath.

Your 1999 Westlake doesn't have an "inverter" but rather a converter, and a crappy one at that - a Centurion, which has long since gone out of business (thankfully). No doubt your Centurion has gone the way most of them did - died. Time to replace it ... call Best Converter for their expert recommendation.
