Why is my water heater anode NOT wearing out??

I've had this new trailer (and its new anode) for a year and a half -- more than 100 nights of camping, with lots of hot water usage. Today I checked the anode -- it was in perfect condition, although there was some white crystalline crud built up on the surface. The white crud easily came off with an exacto knife.

So here is my question -- what does it mean that the anode is not wearing out at all? Is it not doing its job, and is the lining of the water heater getting eaten away instead? We have very hard water at home, but the water in the trailer's tank is often very pure mountain water -- we usually tow the trailer almost empty and then fill the tank in the mountains. Maybe that has something to do with what is going on?

Your powers of deduction will be greatly appreciated-- thanks!!

I check mine on my OFF-ROAD POPUP once a year when I drain my hot water for the winter. It shows some use but no where at the point to be replaced. This has been installed since 2008. I will say we don't use the HOT WATER all that much. I have the 6 gallon suburban model.

  • Hi,

The lower the mineral content of the water the longer the anode rod will last.
  • It's not like they dissolve overnight. I replaced a water heater recently in one of our rentals. The w/h had been installed in 1988- and, curious, I asked my husband to remove and look at the anode. It was only about 1/3 gone! This was in a constantly occupied house, mind you.

I'd expect an anode in a trailer w/h to last a very long time.
