Xantrex c40 meter vs Trimetric monitor?

Just trying to figure out the difference here. I bought a c35 charge controller for my solar setup. You can get a c40 dvm display for it for around $100 that shows battery status, array/load current, amp-hours, battery voltage, and totalizing amp-hours. It seems the only thing this doesn't do compared to the Trimetric is show % of battery. Is this correct or am I missing something?

  • My solar controller set-up does not have its own read outs like some have, but I do have a Trimetric. It is my choice whether to have the solar across the Trimetric's shunt or not, and whether to have anything else on that shunt too.

I chose to put everything on the Tri's shunt after a week of just having the solar on it, so I would know what is "normal" for solar.

Then with everything now on the shunt, I can tell how much of what is showing is due to just solar "close enough." I don't need such accuracy that I need a separate shunt for just the solar. YMMV.

If you have solar with the Trimetric, be sure to shut off the auto reset of AH as described in the instruction manual for solar users.
  • Tuna we should almost start a direct email! You respond to all my topics :) I got the C35 for $95 and a remote temperature sensor for another $25 which I think was fair.

I'll check out the victron. It seems that the c40 panel won't really do what I want.
  • Hi Jonny,

The Victron gauge is cheaper and better than the Trimetric. I hope you got a great price on the charge controller. If you did not purchase the battery temperature sensor, put it on the purchase list.
