F550 Update Post

We went to Florence, OR. and had a nice time at the Rhody Festival and visiting friends. The truck ran great all the way down and half way back. Scanner reports trouble with #1 and #8 fuel injectors. I haven't started digging into the problem yet. I'll start with a good old wire harness jiggle and unplug, replug the harness connectors. The truck was working flawlessly and all of a sudden rough running began. It was worst at 1500 rpm and smoothed out at 2000 rpm. I need to test FICM voltage which should be 48V. Inspect the wiring for wear and possible shorts. I had been adding Hotshots lubricant to the fuel.

My magic touch with FROD engines continues to amaze me! Hopefully I can get this figured out.

I will say, I did get this truck at such a good price, I had decided it would be worth it to me to sink up to 7000 into the engine if need be. I do expect this will be my last truck and camper setup. 70 is just a couple years away. We may switch to a simpler means of RV like a van for ease of use and getting into the living area without having to go outside. We'll see how this pans out.

  • Today, I examined the engine wire harness and found that the tape in places was worn. The harness is also supposed to be attached to several studs and other attachment points on the engine. I examined the wires for any wear points and found none so I put split loom over the exposed points. I gave a jiggle test and made sure all connections were made proper. Tomorrow, I'll test the FICM. Hopefully whatever the problem, I'll find it tomorrow, scratch that, DR appts tomorrow. Thursday I'll put time into figuring this problem out.

I think it unlikely two injectors would go bad at the same time so my money is on the FICM or some yet to be discovered Gremlin or Bug in the works. I shall keep y'all posted.

  • looking up the codes it is a bad injector or wire chafing, the other possibility is it is the fuel injection control module, which seeing they came up at the same time might be the most likely culprit.

That is my current approach.  Going to have to pull some pipes to get a good look at things all buried under there.

  • Check FICM voltages - Each injector has a driver circuit. ficmrepair.com has a good reputation if it turns out to be this box. If they cannot fix it, they can give you a good price on a remanufactured one with some upgraded components. Be aware of battery voltage - If your batteries go weak, the excessive current to make up for lack of voltage will kill the FICM.

I just did a battery test and they passed fine. Will test pin voltage tomorrow. Find out if I have a 4 pin or a 7 pin FICM. I also have that big 240 amp alternator so when running, the truck has plenty of power. Hope you guys are having a nice holiday.

  • I get a PO283 Cylinder 8 circuit high

    PO262 Cylinder 1 circuit high

I'll start looking into what the cause of the problem is. FICM, lose wire, bad plug connection somewhere, shorting wire somewhere. plenty of places to look for issues.
