To Junk Or Not To Junk My Truck

VIDEO >>> https://youtu.be/p34vpGtih1k <<< VIDEO

My truck engine had an exhaust valve break and destroy #5 piston and cylinder walls. I can install a 5.4 junkyard engine and sell, then get a newer truck. I can transplant a larger gas or diesel engine into the truck at some cost and time and keep it. Last option is to buy a larger truck and set it up for truck camping. I'm open to your suggestions and comments.

  • Well guys! A newer F550 4x4 simply isn't just going to appear. I decided, since I wasn't finding a replacement used engine I was comfortable with, I went with a rebuild. At 2200.00 with a couple additional things I requested be done to the engine, I'm now very comfortable that I have a reliable engine that will last me until I locate and purchase A newer, bigger truck and TC.

  • Huh?  I thought you were already beating the options up in another thread. Had lotsa comments about a F550 etc?

Not sure what else you want for opinions. And then you just bought a new engine anyways a few days after posting this….

To answer your question, given your abilities, and seemingly sufficient time to spend hour after hour working on your truck, the best financial decision would be the cheapest used running engine and a for sale sign.
But alas you’re dumping another new motor in an old truck now already.
PS, trucks like yours sell for way too much money back in the salt belt. That’s where I advertise things like this. Generally get someone who will ship it east and pay more than it’s worth here in Seattle because no rust.

  • to me I would be tempted to clean it up, then list if for a price that is reasonable "as is"  some people look for truck with blown engines for motor swaps and if the price is good it will go fast and save you the cost of scraping it and you can still get something out of it.

if it doesn't sell then you have to decide if the time and money you have to put into it to get it to a decent running condition is worth the return.

Problem is well first, a blown up old gasser dime a dozen truck is worth basically jack squat. Couple thousand to the right buyer.
second problem is Jeff has gotten so invested in this truck financially in the last few years that he’s literally upside down on an old vehicle. Which is not too hard to do in the name of “saving money” on a new vehicle. Gotten know when to pull the pin.
Now stuck with $2500-3k in parts and another several days work. Which thank goodness is “free.”

The money really isn't my issue. Done a lot of talking with people about this truck. Under powered, yes. Remamber though, with all the work done to this truck, only age separates it from a newer truck. Suapension is new, steering is new, ball joints are new all brakes are new. Mechanically, it's close to being a new truck for a lot lot less money, even with what I have put into it.

Also, the two engine failures were freaks! How often does an engine break an exhaust valve? How often does an oil sump tube crack and lose oil pressure.

Back to work, engine may be installed today, then off to the TCA Rally.
