'13 vs '14- Rebate ?- Best Value?

So I am trying to convince the better half of the advantage of the 2500 vs 1500 for the travel trailer. Right now the '13 rebates are $1500 more than the '14's. Is this enough of a difference to go with a '13 if we go for it? Or will there be a bigger value loss off as soon as we drive off the lot due to the '13 being a model year old.

The plan wll be to keep this truck for while. Last truck was 10yrs, current is about 3 1/4 yrs, only reason thinking new already is due to being right near the limits of a 1500 and current value of the truck

TY!

  • Sorry, it is a Gm (Chevy) we would be buying. Haven't looked to see what is available for a GMC yet.

One advantage to go with the '14 is the '13's are getting very scarce around us!

MrKoje, the 2500 is the same for both years. Only the 1500 is all new for '14. The 2500 from what I have "heard" will only be the body for '15, with the same drivetrain (including 6.0 motor-latest rumor as the frame was all new in '11).

John & Golden- So true, you never know what the future holds! The future has plans right now that would probably keep us from buying another truck for 8-9 yrs minimum (twin boys-hoping to continue their education in Catholic High School in 4 yrs! And that doesn't inlcude college IF we decide to help there as well!). This is part of the hesitation because of them starting h.s. in 4 yrs, but I think if we stay to the "plan" we would have the truck paid off by then!

1old- Have talked some. Only hard number we haven't talked is the trade. We are eligible for the GMS employee pricing, so truck price is set. And as for trade vs sell outright, couldn't until we sold our current truck. Plus there is an additional $1500 rebate if we trade a Chevy truck in.

The biggest advantage right now that regardless which we go (I HOPE! Lol) with is that the truck is not a daily driver. We have owned our '10 since 5/10 and only have 31k mi so far! Most around town trips the 'Nox is used. There are times we take the truck just because it has been a couple weeks since last used (depending on the time of year-late fall thru early spring unless crappy Mi winter roads or going snowmobiing!).

  • Have you talked to the dealer about hard numbers? There may be much more flexibility in the price of a 13 vs 14. The difference of one model year won't have a significant impact in 10 years when you replace it. If the rebate is the only difference I would go with the 14.
  • When you go to sell it in about 5-7 years, a 2014 will be much more value than a 2013 Just compare the bluebook price of your car, with one a year newer or older, and you will get the idea that it can make a $2,000 - $5,000 difference.

  • You never know what the future will bring. In our case, we purchased 05 2500 Silverado LS with 8.1, Ally, 4.10 ext cab, short bed. We ordered the truck in January 2005, so we could get the options we wanted. Truck case $30,500 out the door (no trade-in, we sold the 1500 to a private party).

In December 2012, we sold the truck for $17,000 (after just short of 8 yrs). We also sold the 5vr to the same couple for 50% of purchased new price.

Rather than be borderline now, IMHO, get the 2013 unless 2014 model have some options/styling/comfort you would prefer - and DON'T LOOK BACK! Enjoy whatever "you two" decide, but 2500 is definitely the way to go!
  • You didn't mention what brand of pickup you are looking at? That does make a difference right now. If you're looking at Chevy and GMC than I would personally get the 2014 model because it's a new (updated) design. Anytime a new design comes out than the previous model will drop in value a bit as the masses come to trade in their now outdated model in for the new one. If the vehicle you're looking at is a Dodge well then their redesign on the 2500s was for the 2013 model year so I would pick that over the 2014 for the rebates because nothing major is changing (unless you want factory air ride suspension)

Let us know which pickup you're considering!
