"DEPENDS"
My Dad had a 67 F100 he could not get a set of front tires to last 20k. Tried wider tires and also had the steering box replaced under warranty and Herb's Chevron in Sedro Woolley, WA worked hard to get it better by heating/bending but NO luck.
I had a 69 F100 Ranger with WIDE BFG's and Crager's. That thing tracked well and tires wore evenly. - GrooverExplorer IIBoth trucks were under 4,000lbs. My 2016 F150 weighs in at 5,600lbs even with the aluminum body. I like my new truck but that goes a long towards explaining why gas mileage hasn't improved more.
And the '74 models would carry more people. You could put 4 in the cab and 8-10 in the back. No need for two rows of seats. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIDad had a 73 Chevy C20 4 speed stick granny 1st.
Had a date and my rig was out of commission. Picked up my gal hit the town. Came to a stop she was setting next to me on the console. I took off in first hard and slammed 2nd trying to show off. Well that didn't turn out so well. Hitting second she slammed the back of her head on the rear window.
Talk about feeling lower than low!!!
Truck was BAD AZZ!!!
We built a 327 with RV Cam headers and of course a Quarda-Puke! full dual exhaust. That thing really ran GREAT!!!
Hauled some crazy loads but nothing to compare to my 98 2500's capacity. - Grit_dogNavigator

Fun to see the old trucks. Seems a bit odd that they compared the Chevy to an F100 instead of F150. But I'm sold; the next time I buy a '74 pickup it will be Chevy. :D
Chevy's worst advertising nowadays is out on the road, every time I pass a work truck or van with paint missing from the hood, I know it's a GM product. And I think, why would I trust a company that can't even get their steel properly prepped for paint?
Those polyester leisure suits and hairstyles bring back the memories.
And while there's no rel excuse for peeling paint, its not exclusive to GM, AND all mfgs struggled with "new" VOC compliance laws 20-30 years ago or so.
And what does peeling paint on an old truck have to do with a new one?
Maybe time to find something new to fixate on.... - ThermoguyExplorer III had a 74 Chev - 4 door DRW. Had the 454...
But I had it in the 90's :) - Me_AgainExplorer IIIThat twin I-beam Ford probably went in the hitch on the way home. They were the worst handling truck ever made.
- gboppExplorerIsn't this a Chevrolet advertisement disguised as a comparison :@
- blofgrenExplorerGreat memories, thanks for sharing!
- That video certainly had me convinced to buy the '74 Chevy over the Ford... but I'm surprised the video didn't show that standard pre-rusted body! :) The rust in those years was unbelieveably bad! The video also reminded me of how long a particular generation of truck was manufactured back then... my '84 was almost identical to that '74 except for a few minor details.
- LwiddisExplorer IIMy 1978 3/4 ton 4x4 Cheyenne was okay...built in Fremont, CA. NO squat however with 3885 pounds of payload. TC weight about 3000 wet. Full time four wheel drive with “lock up” lever. Still have the sales brochure.
