1T Pickup special rules and regulations?

Sorry if this is rehashing old info, but I haven't found a succinct summary.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new Chevy 3500 SRW diesel :). I've seen contradictory information on special considerations for a 3500 vs a 2500. My question is what "special" things do I need to know about the difference between driving a 3/4T vs a 1T?
Specifically where do I find 'definitive' information?

I've heard comments about pulling in to weigh stations, road restrictions, etc. Bottom line is what (if any) special things does a 3500 badge bring into play vs a 2500 badge?

Thanks,
Ron

  • As always, thanks for the quick and informative replies.

    No concerns about weigh stations.

I have a call into MNDot about a GVW restriction on a section of I35 through St. Paul (>9000lb trucks are prohibited, but buses and RVs are OK...not sure if this means I can't drive a 3500 p/u there or not). Otherwise it looks to me like I can drive this pretty much the way I drive my car (but much more comfortably :) ).

    Thanks again!
  • You pull into commercial weigh stations when using a larger vehicle for commercial applications. There's probably an exception to this someplace, but this covers 99% of the use of a large vehicle. Here, I run my tractor with an 50 ton lowboy behind it to haul my private hunting trackrigs. Because there's nothing commercial about it, I don't need a CDL and I don't need to pull into DOT scales. I do need to obey weight limits, but that's it.

If all of the daily driver 1 ton trucks had to pull into the weight scales, they'd be busy building a lot of new scale houses. There is nothing special about a 3500 SRW truck, it's just a truck with a little more capacity than a 2500.

  • I have never pulled into a weigh station, they are for commercial vehicles which you aren't. Unless your state has some unusual rules there is no difference between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton. They handle alike.
  • ..I don't know of any state where you would have to get a special license to tow with a 1 ton SRW truck....Most where you even use a dually don't require it. If towing your own personal RV for recreational use, I've seen Kenworths towing 45' 5th. wheels that don't have to stop at weigh stations or require special license IF only towing their own personal RV for their own personal use.

You should be able to call your local DMV and get any information you need on the topic for your state...probably even bring the regs up on your computer. I can pull them up for any state to see what is needed for what.
  • You'll need to check with your state DMV on what they consider a commercial vehicle and what vehicles are required to pull in. Most 1T trucks used primarily for RV purposes are not considered commercial vehicles in the sense of needing to pull into weight stations. In California you indicate to the DMV the weight rating for your truck and the registration fee is determined by that weight. I have a 4500 rated at 15,000lbs and I don't pull in to weigh stations while towing the 5th wheel.

It's all based upon weight rating of your vehicle and each state is different. Road restriction are usally shown by signage on the road (no commercial vhicles, bridge maximum 80,000lbs...etc)
