- jerem0621Explorer III think this is going to come down to personal preference. The 8.1 is a BEAST... no doubt... but the 6.0 is no weakling and its reliable as a hammer.
I personally lean SUV away from truck beds... so I would be inclined to swap in 4.56 gears. Not sure that a 4.10 would be THAT noticeable coming from 3.73... I could be wrong though.
Thanks!
Jeremiah - BenKExplorer3.73 to 4.1 is an approx 10% in crease in torque multiplication...4.1 to 4.5 is
an appro 10% increase in torque multiplication...that is the general steps for
GM diff ratio's
2002, so GMT800 with the crappy receiver...if it hasn't been changed out to a
traditional receiver, do so before towing. About $200 bucks plus 1 hours labor
to take out the OEM and replace
As to what diff ratio...yes many change out the MPG weighted ratio to a better
towing ratio after they find out
Tie a length of string on the drive shaft and roll the vehicle one tire rev using
the valve stem as a datum.
Then count the number of full turns of string on the drive shaft...and the
faction of a turn
That is your true diff ratio and makes no matter what tire size you have
Remove the string (have to say that, as got on PM from a person mad that I
didn't tell him to remove the string...)
An Avalanche is a Suburban with the rear bobbed. Same drive train/etc
Most after market trailer brake controllers are NOT adjusted well. My P3 works
GREAT...leads the TV and can even stop the whole setup without ever initiating
the TV's brakes
Why, IMHO, integrated works so well for the majority
Key is the GM brake pedal switch...it initiates the brake lights with just
a few millimeters movement...before the pedal rod even moves to generate PSI
in the MC
OATs coolant, so make sure to test it. O2 (air) in the system is VERY bad
and WILL clog up the radiator with acidic globules that will also rot out the
radiator (both main and heater core). Check it out carefully
Good luck!! - PAThwackerExplorerI have a P3 in my sub. I also know its a lobbed sub. I enjoy 10 to 14mpg, hefty payload 2305lbs, luxury interior, 3 rows, and max 6500lb wet trailers.
I was just looking to either swap rings $2,500 in the sub or get a 4000lb increase in tow capacity move to a Big Block with little money out.
I know my quad would fit the inner box of the Avalanche, and current trailer would not exceed ratings.
Opens up local camping/quad options at nearby resorts and state boondock areas.
Enter second quad/bigger trailers: shtf
The other alternatives involve buying multiple trailers ie Dump trailers for $6500, min $1,500 multi place quad trailer and unable to tow semi decent toy haulers (6.0/4l80/3.73 slushbox).
I'd have to dump $20k into semi modern 6sp/6.0 3/4 to one ton SRW 8ft bed. - PAThwackerExplorer
- APTExplorerHave you verified your quad will fit in the bed and can tow the trailer? The Ave has a very short bed, 4.5' I believe. You can open the tailgate but you may not be able to tow with the tailgate down. You can open the mid gate, but then you lose the rear seat. A 3/4 ton crew cab truck will have at least 6.5' bed, or 8'. You may want the 8' bed as the fuel tanks are much smaller with 6.5' bed.

This was my thoughts too. My last ATV wasn't a huge one by no means and took up my whole standard bed. - BurbManExplorer IISo you decided to sell it instead of keeping it? Interesting the PO had airbags in the back, he must have been towing some weight.
- PAThwackerExplorerIt's not sold yet. It's for sale. I was considering just flipping the sub to Ava. Run the sub to auction and payoff difference. I could get any pickup but 10 year old joke 1/2 tons are selling around 14k at wholesale auction. 100k gas 3/4 16k

- APTExplorerI would not replace your current 6.0L with another unless it was 2007+ 6-spd.
If the Ave works for you, go for it. The 8.1L with either axle will tow significantly better. I just think there are valid reasons why the Ave is worth less than comparable crew cab pickup. If your situation is not market typical, take advantage of it.
