2004 4l80e hot trans on hills

Hi my 2004 k2500 transmission gets up to 230f on any grade locked in 3rd gear and not gear hunting. Why is it getting that hot on hills?

  • its just odd, the trans was flushed at 104k and currently has 112k, tow a 4000lb 9.5' high hybrid, and stays at 190 all day long. Hit one 15% 1/2 mile hill and the trans jumps 40 degrees.

ambient air temp 50f, engine temp cool, trans temp 230 and climbing.
  • Could be a variety of reasons....

How many miles on the vehicle?

Is the trans cooler plugged up with bugs?

    Is the trans slipping?

    How heavy is the RV?

Does the fluid smell burnt or appear black/dark?

Has the trans ever been serviced?
