2006 5.4 f-250 CCLB mileage solo?

Just curious what kind of mileage your getting with the 5.4 solo?
Just did a 442.3 mile trip and only averaged 13.32 running 75 mph. Runs good, new plugs and coils and air filter as well.

A little more info. Going through the flint hills , very little wind, temperature in mid 30's ( plenty of cold dense air), majority 4 lane interstate.
  • I used to have an 01 f350 dually with a 5.4. The best I ever got was 14, no matter what I did. That truck always acted like it was struggling.
  • Not sure if you’re surprised at the mileage or if this is just for the sake of discussion
Obviously people have different experiences and those touting great mileage are either full of it or should read the left lane loafer thread.

After the better part of a million miles behind triton engines in all conditions altitude etc, 13 at 75 is right. Less if faster. More if slower.

    Sounds about right.

We get 14-15 with a 2008 V10 but we usually keep it to 65-70mph...that extra 5mph costs a surprising amount of fuel.
That's the oddity of it. I also own a F-250 V-10 CCSB with a 5sp manual that's lower geared 3200 rpm at 75 compared with 2200 rpm on the 5.4 automatic. The V-10 usually gets between 13.57 to 13.75 solo same trip.

That's why the curiosity of what others got in mpg with their 5.4 solo. All milage is hand calculated.

You have a factory truck with overdrive that turns 3200 RPM at 75? What gear, tire, and transmission combo is that?

In all fairness the milage was only one trip on the 5.4 compared to several with the V-10 and there could be a difference between summer and winter blend fuels, wind conditions, and so many other factors in a uncontrolled test.

A sample of one isn't enough and 30 samples is a minimum to be statistically significant. There's too many variables that affect fuel economy and a sample of one is not nearly enough.

Unlike some people who get a good fuel economy sample and that's what they always advertise going forwards.
  • ^And you could do 1000 samples and a little 5.4 pushing a big truck is still going to have a drinking problem!

Not sure what the rear gears ratio is, transmission is the manual 5 speed. I'm the second owner and the only modification I'm aware of is the Firestone air bags on the rear.
  • Running empty at 75mph, the engine type doesn't make a lot of difference. It's enough load that either is up into it's efficient power output without being overloaded.

Where you might see some difference is:
    - At very low power output where the parasitic drag of a bigger engine will reduce MPG...but really, V8 to V10 isn't that much difference, so I wouldn't expect much. Probably too small to measure accurately.
    - At very high output (pushing the V8 past it's tow rating), it could result in the V8 being outside it's efficient power output range while the V10 may stay within it's efficient range. There you might get a measurable difference.
  • My 2008 2wd cclb f350 5.4, best highway mpg was around 14.
About 9 or 10 towing the travel trailer.
  • It's going to have another long trip at the end of the month. I will be picking up a motorcycle and a TT. Total trip around 3000 miles. I thought about taking the Diesel but don't want to take the topper off. Half the trip will be solo, the other half pulling a 7k trailer and hauling a 500 pound bike.
