2006 Escalade AWD (Base) towing

Hello to all. I currently have a 2006 Escalade AWD for a tow vehicle. My question is what size of trailer should I be looking to be safe towing?

Is a 2008 Rockwood Signature 8318SS to much trailer for this vehicle? If yes then can someone suggest an appropriate trailer with bunks that is within my weight/safety limits?

Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions you can provide.
  • I have a Rockwood 8318SS ultralite.

Our tow vehicle is a 3/4 ton Suburban.

In my opinion, it might work but would definitely be on the edge.

Power would not be a problem. Even though I have an 8.1L, the 6.0L is a strong engine.

Other drivetrain parts that are lighter duty(transmission, etc) might suffer durability issues.

The cargo capacity would be a question mark as others have stated. This trailer sleeps a lot of people, so I assume you are bringing a lot of people. The weight of all these people will determine the max tongue weight.

Also, be sure you don't overload the rear axle. Find out your maximum rear axle weight. I weighed the front and rear of my Sub and the rear axle weight was 3630lbs with only me and a full tank of gas. Adding the 7 other people and cargo we haul I estimate it would add at least 700lbs to the rear axle for a total of about 4300lbs. The GRAWR (max rear axle weight rating) was 5500lbs, so I had about 1200lbs for max tongue weight. My trailer tongue weight (with the Hensley) is about 900-1000lbs. So you see even the 3/4 ton Sub is almost pushed to the max on the rear axle.

  • that might be a bit long and heavy for an escalade. that engine will pull it fine, but your vehicle will not do well with the length and weight when it comes to stopping and controlling the trailer. looking for a bunkhouse with dry weight less than 5000lbs and length no longer than 28-31 feet would serve you better.
  • Open the driver's door and locate this sticker. Note how much payload yours has there mine says 2051.

Subtracts off the estimated weight of your family and things to occupy their time while traveling. Multiply by 8 for loaded TT weight.

My guess it for a family looking at large bunk houses towing with a heavily optioned TV, you will run out of payload well short of a 7000 pound loaded TT. And that's why I have a 3/4 ton Burb instead of a half.
  • I really like the Apex line of TT for a half ton towing situation.

Check out this bunk house trailer.

Very much in your weight rating.

    Thanks!

  • I tow a 24-foot Cougar TT with a 2007 Escalade. Compared to your Escalade, mine has a slightly larger engine (6.2 liter vs 6.0 liter), but otherwise I think comparable.

My Cougar dry weight is about 500 pounds less than the trailer you are considering. My tongue weight is approximately 10% of total weight so about 700 pounds with the trailer fully loaded. It's just myself and my wife and we carry very little else in the Escalade so we are well below the 1400 pounds of payload.

I have towed about 13,000 miles over the past 3 seasons and have been very pleased with the Escalade's mountain climbing performance as well as braking going down steep descents.

Having said all this, I would not want another 9 feet of trailer behind me as would be the case with the trailer you are considering. In general, I think you will find on the forums that the majority believe that a 33-foot TT is just too long to be safely pulled by any half-ton truck.
  • You're missing the most important numbers, the "payload" rating of your vehicle and the tongue weight of the towed trailer. If you're considering towing of a larger trailer, the tongue weight may exceed the payload rating of your vehicle with occupants, fuel, and gear hauled in the Escalade.
A quick search lists your payload rating as around 1400 lbs. Assuming a trailer weight of 7000 lbs. and typical tongue weight distribution of 13%, the tongue weight would be 910 lbs. That leaves around 500 lbs of payload for everything in the Escalade. You would also be at the maximum and that is a topic for further discussion.
  • Sorry I should have posted these numbers...To the best of my knowledge. I am looking for help "interpretting" them

    2006 Escalade AWD 6.0 engine (345 hp)
    Wheel Base 130"
Max Towing 7800 lbs/8100 lbs (electric brakes)
    Curb Weight 5761 lbs

2008 Rockwood Ultra Lite Signature 8318ss
    Length: 33ft
    Width 8.0ft

  • You need to look up the towing capabilities of your Escalade in the owners manual. If you do not have a manual, look it up online. Then, look up the trailer's specifications online and compare the two.
