These figures assume you don't drive like a nut and maintain reasonable speeds.
IMO; if you are not in it for the long haul, diesel makes less sense. I would not consider any vehicle an "investment".

The 2007 and newer don't get that kind mileage with a camper on them, nor do they get 22 mpg empty, unless they've been deleted and tuned.
