We are "retail stooges", and unfortunately that includes our 2006 Duramax 2500HD. It has been less than reliable, and what started with about 10,000 miles on it as leaking coolant hoses finally manifested itself as head gasket problems just a few thousand miles and a few months past warranty. To the credit of GM and my local dealer, an initial estimate of $9000 was eventually divided equally between manufacturer, dealer, and owner.
We love the performance and power of the truck, but there is no justification for owning it beyond that. Simple mathematics indicate that unless the truck runs flawlessly from here to 300,000 miles, we should have bought a gasser.
Would I buy another one NEW - definitely maybe, if my bank account was bottomless. It really has been a frustrating experience but one that is tempered every time I am climbing a hill with the camper loaded and the truck hardly breaking a sweat. Would I buy a USED one WITHOUT warranty - NEVER, NOT IN A THOUSAND YEARS.
