2008 dura max

Looking at a chevy 2008 with the dmax engine. I read a lot about that being an early emission year so the milage really not so good. Anyone out there own one and what do you get loaded and empty. I am thinking of going to Alaska this summer and looking for a dependable ride. I was going to take my harley but I already own a TC and I hate riding in the rain. So maybe the best idea is to just take the TC combo. Its a lot more conveniance for a few thousand dollars of fuel. I can also take my dog so I save the kennel bill and I have someone to talk to. The guy with the truck has only had it 3 months and says it does not get the milage he thought it would. Anyone that owns one care to share.

  • We purchased our 08, in SIG below, last month. We are on our first trip now and averaged 9.8 mpg towing are 12600lb fiver. The trip was only 68 miles one way on I20 with cruise st at 62mpb. Several hills to climb and strong head winds. Solo I have been averaging 16.8 in mixed country and city roads. Love my new truck. You won't be dissapointed.
  • My '08 gets 20 - 21 mpg on long interstate trips (according to the computer.) I'll get 10 - 12 when towing.
  • one thing I don't like on the newer diesels, 07 and newer is that darn filter you have to mess with. they get clogged up and you either have to replace them and or have them cleaned, neither is a cheap maintenance thing.
  • Have a 2007.5 chevy dually.When I had all my emission******I was getting 15mpg hand calculated with 373 gears.With out emissions I get 19/20 with efi tuned
    Towing my 39ft 5ver I get 12mpg loaded down
  • I have the 09 Duramax. Just turned 62,000 miles and no issues so far. I get about 16 unloaded highway and hauling the TC about 11-12 average. I have a heavy TC.
  • We own a 2006 2500hd as far as weight carring capability goes ours has a Lance 881 loaded with everything needed plus options as of yesterday we have put 175867 miles both highway an city driving . So far no problems an no complaints . We installed air bag after trading our Lance 845 ,at the suggestion of our spring man. As far as economy we get around 15/17@ 55/60 mph. In the city or in hilly country ou mpg will drop down to 12/13 .
  • First it is Duramax, one word.
Typically you should expect 17-19 solo highway maybe 10 towing a trailer and probably 10-11 with a camper on the back.
That is reasonable fuel economy for most folks.
Biggest things as with any used diesel, has it had a tuner or emissions tampered with. Second is maintenance history, then have all the updates been done.
Last, is this a 2500HD? and if yes, how big is your camper. In the real world the payload on a 2500HD is only going to be around 1700-1800 pounds.
