2008 F350 Dually

Other than the poor fuel mileage, are there any major problems with this truck. It has the 6.4L engine and is the King Ranch model.
I know this is the trcuk between the 6.0L and the 6.7L but don't know much about the quality of this engine.
Thanks

The 6.4 are notorious for rocker arm wear due to fuel dilution (this wear is usually excellerated by the F450/F550 trucks due to higher rpm operation), errosion of the aluminum front engine cover behind the water pump to the point where antifreeze can get into the engine oil because of the large water pump impeller forcing massive water volume, lower EGR cooler can crack and fill the #8 cylinder with antifreeze and hydrolocking the engine. Because of the above mentioned issues, a catastrophic engine failure can be avoided if the operator frequently checks the fluid levels.

I spent some time talking to my cousin this past Christmas who is a Ford and Cummins certified tech he does not recommend the 6.4.

    X2

HERE'S what another Ford Senior Master Tech has to say about it. And I won't link any Joe Diesel youtubes :B

Well if I read most of the posts on this forum, I would never have bought one. The 2008, 6.4 that I do own has been excellent. It is a towing machine. With the price of trucks today, I doubt I'll ever replace this one for some time. It currently has 88k miles. Empty it gets 13 mpg, towing it gets 9.5 to 10 mpg. I must have bought one of the few good 6.4 ford trucks out there. :R. Go figure.

    X2 - I like mine.

  • I owned the 2008 F450 KR dually, and except for the low gas mileage, never had any problems with it. I now have a 2011 F350 KR dually, and believe that my 2008 was more comfortable to sit in and to drive. I agree with what George H said about not getting a Job 1 if at all possible, and while you're at it I'd check with a Ford dealer to make sure all of the customer satisfaction programs, recalls, re-flashes, etc. if any were applicable, were made. I'd also steer away from a 4.88 rear end unless you own your own oil company or do not mind the even lower mpg.
  • There are 3 versions of the 08 Superduty, Job1, Job2 and Job3 depending on build date. Take the vin number to Ford dealer service and get oasis report to show vehicle history. I'd avoid Job1 (earliest) models.

  • My complaint is your limited to B5. Fuel stations in the midwest all seem to have signage stating may contain up to B20. Straight #2 dino difficult to find.
  • Certainly has a better rep the the 6.0

The transmission is solid, as the the rear-end.

We've had no issues with any of the other systems on our 2008 F350 dually, except we have the V10, which gets even worse mileage.
