- scottykrugExplorer14 mpg towing in mountains on our last trip. No def. think 09 was the last year before the transition.
- Me_AgainExplorer IIII would not by any used non DEF 6.7 Dodge/Cummins. Reason is low fuel mileage for those vintage trucks(07.5 - 12). My 2001.5 gets over 12 towing! So you buy an early 07 5.9 or older and get a 4 speed auto(I would opt for the 6 speed manual) or you buy one of the new DEF 6.7's!!!!
Chris - HybridhunterExplorerFrom a guy that owns one, he told me that in order to not use DEF, the cummins was tuned strange. He "blew a turbo", mechanic told him he wasn't the first.
2nd and 3rd hand here, so take it with a grain of salt. - scottykrugExplorerLove ours. Only problem we have had was a broken speaker wire and I am just finding a squeaky front brake (will pull it apart and clean it). Get mpg in the teens pulling our 6,000# trailer and pass people like they a standing still going up mountain passes. I have heard that the turbos can soot up but I run the exhaust brake all the time which supposedly helps. I do notice it regens a lot, but as long as it does its job I don't care.

MY BIL had a 09 6.7 Cummins for about 9 months. After multiple trips to the shop for CEL lights and soot clogging the turbo he dumped the POS after several flash updates and a turbo cleaning it just never was right.
Keep looking there's better trucks.
BTW... If you want a Cummins stick with the 5.9. :B
Good luck
I don't own one but know several people that do on our horseshow circuit. Generally towing very heavy. Never heard any one say anything bad. If the BIL was using it as a grocery getter then it might be a problem, I guess. - Tom_BarbExplorerMechanic working the dealerships always see the broken truck, they never see the 99% that never get worked on.
- Bionic_ManExplorerRead the trollers other posts before you put any faith in what he says about Ram trucks.
I've never heard of any issues on the '09. It was the last of the 3rd generation trucks, really nothing new that year.
That said, I think I would look for a '10, the first year of the new body style, much bigger cab, better interiors, same engine and tranny. - donn0128Explorer II

If he drove it like a passenger car I can totally understand this. Personally my very early 07 6.7L has been great. But then again I don't drive it easy. Drive it hard, in other words use it like its intended and they are great trucks. As long as all the updates have been done and some jerk has not tried to run a tuner of some sort it should be fine. - MY BIL had a 09 6.7 Cummins for about 9 months. Good luck - wuhungsixExplorerYour in Canada. Delete the EPA emissions equipment so it doesnt choke on its own soot and it will be a winner.
