2015 Dodge 3/4 Ton Really Not Camper Compatible?

Buddy of mine bought a 2015 Dodge 3/4 ton crew cab short box diesel a few months back. I "helped" him when he asked if there was anything I didn't like about my 3/4 ton GMC gas and told him a diesel would be my next choice so I could tow a boat without all the RPM.

He went into a Lance dealer this week who said they wouldn't sell him anything heavier than a pop-up camper pointing out the sticker in his door jam that said max payload including passengers is 2360. I was shocked it was that low. The 6.4 gas version is nearly 1k greater at 3,280.

This is the grey area for me when it comes to the suspension, wheel and tire upgrades one makes to their rig for a camper. Does it not also upgrade the payload/Gross vehicle weight rating?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If it was me I would look for another rv dealer that knew something about trucks and actual load carrying weight issues.

Upgrading to a higher capacity wheel/tire and rear suspension will allow the truck to carry more weight safely but won't change any thing on a sticker.

I'm looking at new 2500 4x4 crew cab 2015/'16 Ram truck 6.7 Cummins 10k GVWR and a 6500 RAWR as we speak.
The 2500 Ram(s) I'm looking at has a 6500 RAWR which leaves around a 3500 lb RAWR payload as delivered. Of course that number changes as the owner adds necessary junk :) to the truck especially over the rear axle...... and actual scaled axle weights.
  • Ram also makes a truck with a VERY short bed...this could be an issue also with COG.
You did not specify bed length.

You could put Fiat emblems on the truck but, many of us will continue to call it a Dodge. :)

    LOL.....

  • Dodge hasn't made trucks in years. You're probably talking about Ram Trucks line of trucks. The cummins diesel power plant is one heavy engine compared to he gassers. Makes you wish they adopt the 5.0 Cummins for the 2500 trucks to get some payload for hose who want diesel.
  • Yup, by sticker I have around 800 lbs of payload to play with. Personally...I ignored this and went by rear axle/tire/wheel limits.

Its a choice to make with a 2500 series truck.

Even though suspension modifications can often allow for carrying heaviers loads, generally for the end consumer nothing will allow for a different higher GVWR. Sometimes upfitters are allowed to adjust the GVWR as provided under agreement with Ram as they make modifications. Our local Lance dealer would not sell a camper that was more weight than the available payload and for most of Lance's larger campers that required a one ton dually minimum.
  • Just try another dealer. Probably lots of dealers that will sell him anything he wants.
