2015 Ram 1500 a Contender? Not.

I posted in another thread my finding the payload on a 2015 EcoDiesel being only 1200 pounds. That was per the sales guide at the dealership.
Well, tonight I happened by a Dodge/Ford dealership and found a new 1500 Longhorn EcoDiesel. Beautiful truck. I took it for a spin and was very surprised by the average 26 mpg being reported on the dash. But that couldn't come remotely close to the surprise when I looked at its payload. Total of occupants and cargo shall not exceed... Sit down... Wait for it... 847 pounds! Really? I went into the showroom to find the same truck with the Hemi, and it revealed 950. Is Ram serious? That's not even close to respectable for a few guys to head north for a hunting trip!
The interesting part was sitting in the delivery bay were two 2015 F150 Platinum trucks with 3.5L EcoBoosts. Both showed payloads of 1547. That is more like it.
I really was interested in the Ram, but there is no way $58,000 and 850# of payload is practical. Just imagine a family of four going camping. You couldn't even set the hitch on the ball and you'd be close to overweight. Interesting, but sad how many don't even know the reality. As I left, the salesman I spoke with had two others on their knees bent over looking at the sticker on the B-pillar. They just couldn't believe it. The Chrysler 300 sitting next had a higher payload I'll bet.

    As I said, I've seen first hand what payload numbers are. I also was looking at a Hemi 5.7L V8 Crew Cab 4WD, not a much lighter 3.6L V6 Double Cab 2WD. They compare that lighter truck against a F150 Turbo V6 Crew Cab 4WD.

    Also pickup trucks.com has previously stated base weights of F150s as scale weights, which were not actual weights.

    Go out to a dealer, ask them to open the doors of a Hemi 5.7L Crew Cab 4WD truck and then actually look at the payload numbers as I have. Then you don't have to go off incorrect numbers off of truck reviews.

    The rams were the lightest configurations offered and not true to an everyday truck.

    I don't know how much more clear they can make it. Pictures of the trucks on a scale in the article, then "scale weight" with a number beside it. :h But really, it doesn't matter to me as I don't own a 1500, nor am I in the market for one.

    The problem is that they still market them as having capabilities to do work, when they really don't and have capabilities as 'cars'.

    That was the whole point of the thread that it's a truck with car capabilities, that is being marketed to do work beyond it's capabilities.

    get with the program guys...you are looking at them as "TVs" and most of the
    buyers look at them as "cars"

    So from that view point...sure thing it makes sense

    Plus that is the OEM's (all of them) surveys have found to be the case...so the
    OEM's have spent hundreds of thousands of bucks to design them for the 'car' crowd

    Why I call them 'fashion statement crowd' that now drives our TV offerings

    Why they don't want anything with a higher rating than any 'half ton'
    and why the OEMs (some) have fake half tons...

    I call BS. I've seen it first hand, low 1200 lbs when F150s configured the same are around 1500 lbs. These being Crew Cab 4WD trucks.

    I've seen it first hand, on the dealers lots. No paper can dispute what I've seen first hand.

    GVWR for my Crew Cab 4WD is 7350 lbs! Ram configured the same had a pathetic GVWR of only 6800 lbs. That's a whopping 550 lbs more for the Ford F150! No wonder Ram has such a lower payload. The couple hundred lbs lighter they are, doesn't make up for the lower 550 lbs GVWR.

    As I said, their 2500/3500s are nice but the 1500 is a car designed to look like a truck. :D

    BTW, nice truck. I'm considering the same for my next round in 2018.

    You might want to go to Fords website for more accurate information. 2,200-2,300 pounds is not an issue on Supercrews according to Ford, and regular cabs well over 3,000.

    What I posted is far more accurate than a manufacturer's website. Click on the "source" link for more info, but it comes from the source weighing the trucks on a scale and subtracting that from GVWR.


    Looks like they only posted bases weights. Go check out the door jam weights and find the low payloads as many of us have. Ram for 3/4 and 1 ton good, Ram for 1500 not good.

    While it's true that some RAM 1500s can be configured so they have less than 1000# payload, the typical trucks are the same as Ford, at 1300 - 1600#. GM seems to have the most 1500 series payload these days. There are a few recent threads here with more real world payloads. While many like to use the Ram 1500 as the "low payload" whipping boy, it just isn't the case in the real world, or no worse than Ford, even with the new alum body.

I took it for a spin and was very surprised by the average 26 mpg being reported on the dash. But that couldn't come remotely close to the surprise when I looked at its payload. Total of occupants and cargo shall not exceed... Sit down... Wait for it... 847 pounds! Really? I went into the showroom to find the same truck with the Hemi, and it revealed 950. Is Ram serious? That's not even close to respectable for a few guys to head north for a hunting trip!
The interesting part was sitting in the delivery bay were two 2015 F150 Platinum trucks with 3.5L EcoBoosts. Both showed payloads of 1547. That is more like it.
I really was interested in the Ram, but there is no way $58,000 and 850# of payload is practical. Just imagine a family of four going camping. You couldn't even set the hitch on the ball and you'd be close to overweight. Interesting, but sad how many don't even know the reality. As I left, the salesman I spoke with had two others on their knees bent over looking at the sticker on the B-pillar. They just couldn't believe it. Also pickup trucks.com has previously stated base weights of F150s as scale weights, which were not actual weights.

Besides, that the Ram is only a work truck Express ST (pretty much base truck) that is a Quad Cab (other's extended cab), and has a small and light 3.6L V6. The trucks I compared to were \"crew cab\", were midline models, not work trucks, and had heavier turbo V6 or V8 engines.

Those aren't actual specs they're siting. The fuel economy they posted is right off the brochure. They did not do their own test to find economy as does Truck Trend/Motor Trend & Car and Driver.

Besides, that the Ram is only a work truck Express ST (pretty much base truck) that is a Quad Cab (other's extended cab), and has a small and light 3.6L V6. The trucks I compared to were \"crew cab\", were midline models, not work trucks, and had heavier turbo V6 or V8 engines.

I call BS. I've seen it first hand, low 1200 lbs when F150s configured the same are around 1500 lbs. These being Crew Cab 4WD trucks.

I've seen it first hand, on the dealers lots. No paper can dispute what I've seen first hand.

GVWR for my Crew Cab 4WD is 7350 lbs! Ram configured the same had a pathetic GVWR of only 6800 lbs. That's a whopping 550 lbs more for the Ford F150! No wonder Ram has such a lower payload. The couple hundred lbs lighter they are, doesn't make up for the lower 550 lbs GVWR.

As I said, their 2500/3500s are nice but the 1500 is a car designed to look like a truck. :D

BTW, nice truck.
