:) Hi, I just read that Ford thread and it looks like the Dodge boys caused all of the ruckus. So I guess you can say the Dodge thread is still going because the Ford people are more civil. :p - Cummins12V98Explorer IIILooks like the Ford thread like this just closed. Sorry, I forgot to answer that portion of your question as to why Ford is posting the numbers of the J2807 instead of their own standards. One word.... marketing. They know Ram( in this case) will post a tow rating going by the lower standard J2807 tow rating which will give them the marketing right to say the stupid "best in class" slogan which due to US advertising laws you cannot say it unless it were true(in some way). So what is Ford to do? Either stick with its standards that give them lower rating that is more reasonable or go by the J2807 which their competitor is using to give them higher numbers for marketing purposes. I think they chose poorly in my opinion by jumping into this "best in class" circle jerk. All it is is a pissing contest set by lower standards just so each can lawfully market that they are "best in class" and their bone headed fanboy followers of each brand can brag about some number even though it is set by a lower standard. Nothing more.
In all honesty, I would like to know what metrics Ford uses for towing as their standard? Also, I would like to know what prevents Ford from noting they adhere to the J2807 specs. If they exceed every spec in J2807, any marketing guy would know they could advertise as exceeding J2807 specs. If I was a marketing exec, I'd take advantage of that. However, I don't see it on the F-250 or F-350. However, I do see J2807 compliance on the F-450. So the question is, what metric are the other two trucks not meeting?
Also, I noted in my other thread, seems like people get hung up on what J2807 means. I see it as a minimum. Here's what people can find on the web easily with a little google-fu (these are SRW specs, duallies seem to get more time). Automobile Mag- Acceleration: On level ground, hit 30 mph in 12 seconds. 60 within 30 seconds. Go from 40 to 60 in 18 seconds or less.
- Braking: From 20 mph without trailer brakes, 35 feet or less with a 3000 pound or less weight rating. 45 feet or less with a trailer weight rating of 3000 pounds or less and a trailer brake requirement. 80 feet or less for trailer weight ratings above 3000 pounds.
- Climbing: Climb Davis Dam (3,000 foot altitude increase over 11.4 miles) maintaining 40 mph with air conditioning on full-blast in 100 degree ambient temps with no recirculation.
- Launching: On a 12 percent grade (rise of 12 feet over a run of 100 feet), move 16 feet from a standstill 5 times wtihin 5 minutes in the uphill direction in forward and reverse.
- Weight: When setting GVWR for vehicles under 8500 lbs, it must account for a 150 pound driver, 150 pound passenger. For vehicles over 8500 GVWR, they must account for another 100 pounds of equipment in the rating.
- no more than 5 degrees of permanent angular deflection of the hitch attachment point.
Standards are meant to be minimums and I think that if a company exceeds a standard, they should be proud of it.
edit: added some more info for those that don't feel like using Google. - Acceleration: On level ground, hit 30 mph in 12 seconds. 60 within 30 seconds. Go from 40 to 60 in 18 seconds or less.

Why?
Then Ford shouldn't rate their F450 to tow 30,000# either. It's all a contest by the respective advertising departments - no matter the brand. They ALL do it - Ford, GM, and RAM.
I am with you that Ford(or any brand) shouldn't rate it that high either which is why I said this.....ShinerBock wrote:
That is fine, I don't think trucks like that should be towing 30,000 lbs in the first place. That should be left to medium duty commercial trucks. This "30,000 lbs towing battle" that Ford and Ram are doing is senseless which is why I applaud GM for staying out of it.
..... in this thread last week.
GM couldn't compete because their 3500 DRW wasn't rated high enough to compete with the Ram 3500 and the Ford F350 in the 30,000# weight competition.....Thus the reason they didn't compete...Though they could have competed with the weight in this test. No Reason for GM to compete, they've beaten both Ford and Ram in head to head test year after year. They really don't have anything to prove....The Ford with more HP and TQ should easily, I would think, win this competition..I didn't watch the link, but didn't buy my truck to see who could get to the top of the mountain first, or I would have stayed with Chevy if that had been what I was out for..
I think GM is standing on the sidelines and got out of the HP/TQ/Weight races because the weaker Allison 1000 tranny is maxed out! Chris
Bill Kondolay of DTT years ago had several Alison's in his shop designing upgrades. I asked him about them and he said they were good but had weak spots. - jrp26789ExplorerI actually like the SAE J2807. It may not be the best numbers ect. But it's the same for everyone using it. I can then determine from there. For instance if the rating says it can tow 15500. But I am not happy with the spec but would like 12500. I know for every manufacturer I can tow 80% of what the spec is. At least it's equal.

I typically don't block people either. As a matter of fact I only blocked 2 people with the other being a Canadian saying some bad things about the USA on this site. We do get one particular person here that likes to tout the SAE J2807 (and a few followers as well) and I don't think he has a clue to what he's regurgitating.
Seeing as how I NEVER tout the SAEJ2807 numbers, know very little about them, and only reference them when others do...I have no clue who you're referring to, but see you quoted some of "my" post...And as usual, for you, stalking me yet again and going out of your way to post ugly, rude remarks about people you don't even know, insulting their intelligence as though you are some kind of genius yourself.... I guess the only way you can overcome your inadequacies is by posting ugly, rude remarks about others...Something I haven't done to you since I found out you were following me from forum to forum..stalking others and going out of one's way to say rude, ugly things about them is unbecoming no matter how smart you "think" you are....
you need to block more people out to where the only one's you can read are just the one's that agree with you on everything and then you would be in paradise.....
Yep, he made my block list within days of joining...Now if you guys would just stop quoting him!
NC,
