I think it would work fine. The ratings on the XD aren't great but real world I would bet it's a definite step up from a regular half ton based on the curb weight and torque of the diesel. That said I also think a regular HD diesel would work better for about the same expense, so that's the way I would go. The Cummins in the Ram is less complex and more powerful, in a heavier truck. Mileage is a wash.
