no amount of "beefing" up will compensate for the 1/2 ton being lighter will lower duty brakes - been there, done that and know how it ends.
For what its worth I daily drove my F250 for 4 years and day drive my F350 now and other than riding a little rougher than my F150 its no harder to park or live with than my crew cab, 6.5 box F150 was. Heck the F250 and F350 use less fuel both towing and not towing than the F150 did.
This has been my experience too, with the one additional caveat that height can be an issue in some parking garages. Other than height and a little stiffer ride I don't see many disadvantages to a newer HD truck over a comparably configured half ton, but I sure see a lot of advantages.
The F150's are capable trucks but there are definitely advantages to the HD. There are also a lot more people that move up, then move down. The stiffer chassis and better brakes are spot on. You may not notice the brakes with no emergency stops...but it'll happen sooner or later. I've stood on the F150, felt a weird vibration through the brake pedal and kept rolling (Had at least 10k lbs on the truck at the time between trailer and passengers). Took the trailer off and the brakes were normal. I also think you end up over using your trailer brakes with a half ton and they will fade on you. My F250 shuts the TT down fast in comparison. That alone was worth the upgrade imo.
I haven't read any bad things about the brakes on the newer F-150 not stoppin its rated capacity, and I would think a trailer brake controller would need adjustment, or definitely a set a high performance Stoptech cross drill rotors and performance pads.
I've always upgrade the pads, rotors, and shocks on any vehicle I get, because I tow a 6x8 utility trailer with my Honda Accord, and can attest to the braking power of upgrade components.
What year was the truck, and were you pushing up against the towing or payload limits?
You said you had 10,000lbs on the truck, so I'm assuming you had the HDPP.
Was the pads factory or aftermarket replacement?
