Hi Mike.
We own an 855S and carry it on a F350, srw, crew cab. The combination handles incredibly well and, so far, has not presented me with any white knuckle drives.
Here's some food for thought:
- If you buy a one ton truck, it is highly unlikely you will wish you had bought a three-quarter ton.
- If you buy a three-quarter ton truck, you may end up wishing you went with a one ton.
The last thing you probably need is my advice, but trust me, I have several years of experience watching consumers make rushed decisions they would later regret. So, based on what I've witnessed (combined with the fact that you don't already own a truck), I would encourage you to be very patient and spend your hard-earned money wisely, by purchasing the right truck for what you want to do -- which is to carry a hard-sided camper with a slide. By the time you're fully loaded, you will be approaching 4000-pounds. If you stay focused on your goal, you will find the right truck. It all comes down to patience and timing.
In regards to the on-board generator -- we have had one on both our truck campers and really enjoy having it. Are the portables quieter? Yes. Do I need to go outside in the rain, snow, mud, or middle of the night to set-up, or start, my on-board? No!
For me, I love the convenience, but there really is no right or wrong answer. Honestly, you probably won't find yourself putting many hours on either one, but it's nice to have the energy source when you need it.
Good luck with your search for the perfect truck. Be sure to post some pictures when you get it!
