3/4 vs 1 ton .

My answer was to buy a small, used cheap commuter car and leave the truck parked except when towing. It was even less expensive and a lot more convenient.

The cost difference between a 3/4ton and a 1ton SRW is negligible.

This. Love reading about how guys turn their 3/4 ton into an 1 ton with $20 worth of parts from Harbor Freight or what-not.

Hilarious to see what people drag into campgrounds...

Visit some RV parks and you will find that the larger/heavier 5th wheel trailers are towed by vehicles that have four rear tires. The smaller/lighter ones often get by with two. Decide on which trailer you plan to tow and the decision is easy. (That trailer does not fit in the smaller/lighter category

I am the op and no that wasn't what I was asking.I did appreciate all the comments, I figured some one would catch that sooner or later.I was asking, just to recap, can I,,use 3/4 ton or must it be a one ton duel .yes it will be diesel.and cc.5th wheel.will be 15500 max weight. 41is length. Columbus 385 bh.

The recommendation is that the OP should purchase a SRW 2500 and install duallies and a heavier spring pack to make it a 3500 DRW?

Handling and traction are reasons for drw. If you tow a sizeable boat it helps a lot to get it off a slimy launch ramp but you really need four wheel drive too.
Soft or muddy campgrounds dualie makes a big difference expecially if you have four wheel drive.

I agree possibly with the nail thing but you are probably about twice as likely to pick up a nail also. Right? Even more likely for sidewall damage with the tires throwing road trash between them. Also I have to disagree about traction on a boat ramp, mud or wet grass. I think a SRW does better in all those circumstances. All though you may need 4 wheel drive with either a srw or drw in any of those conditions, if it is slick enough. JMHO

I have nothing against drw by the way. They are the right tool for the job many times. I have owned one myself.

The wheels are also different. If you have the aluminum 2500hd wheels they are not rated for the 1 ton.

The only difference is 1/2" width. 1/4 a side. Conferred with two tires dealers at the time as I was going to look into some used wheels. They said absolutely no problem using the existing wheels. They replace 2.45 tires with the 2.65s for customers on pick ups most of the time. Been on there over 12 years, no problems. But I'm sure some of you guys think it's a death defying deal LOL :)
