I'm obviously being cynical a bit about the normal driving stuff, but I'm dead serious about the "enhanced" license.
An enhanced license will solve nothing. Accidents are not prevalent with 18,000 pound toyhaulers behind a 14,000 GVWR Ram diesel. Those with 'enhanced' licenses have the most exposure and often the most accidents of any category of truck class on the highway. CDL means nothing if the operator is tired, sick, in a hurry, distracted, or is driving over their capabilities in inclement weather conditions. The accident stats do not bode well with over the road truckers all who have CDL's.
I tend to agree with a previous poster that the arbitrary number of 26,000 for a CDL for a commercial truck driver (and some motorhome diesel pushers needing a non commercial CDL) is dated and now too low. It is basically just a number and largely irrevelant. Accident stats should set numbers not politics.
