373 gear ratio vs. 410 gears ratio

What would you do?
I have a stock 2005 Dodge Ram 3500, diesel, automatic, dully, 2 wheel drive with 354 gear.
I been thinking on changing out my gear to 373 or 410 to help pull alittle bit better.
Which gear ratio would you go with and why?
  • IMO, it would not be worth the trouble/expense to just do 3.73. Just going up in tire size would put you back to near 3.54 again. Just using for example, but if change is needed, I'd do the 4.10. The lower gearing may take some strain off from the transmission also.

  • OP, you may want to go back and read all the rules - you not supposed to double post.
Also, you have good answers on your other post.
  • I don't think you could get a 3.55 rear gear in 05. Or any 3rd gen for that matter. 3.73, or 4.10 only.

Found this pictorial on-line that shows the different gear ratio's verses best fuel mileage and towing power...

The 3.73 is right in the middle

The 4.10 will give you more towing power but will suffer more in fuel mileage

If your trailer is really heavy then the higher number is what you may need to be able for your truck motor to tow it better...

I always get the 3:73 ratio to have the best of both worlds for gas mileage and towing...

In my case here with my 4200lb loaded OFF-ROAD POPUP Trailer My 2010 F150 Ford truck doesn't know the popup trailer is being pulled. This is probably mostly because of much decreased wind load. I actually get about the same gas mileage of around 20mpg on my trips whether I am towing the POPUP trailer or not...

  • I have essentially the same truck with 3.73 axle. I find there is an awkward zone when towing in the 55-60 mph range when in overdrive. If towing at 62-70 mph on flat roads I find the ratio works well. The mountains like the tow/haul mode exclusively.
  • If it was a gasser, I would say go for it, but with a diesel ... You definite want some feedback from those using that high of a gear with that engine.

How many speeds on your transmission and can you easily drop a gear ?

My '98 4.6L E150 slows quite a bit on long hills, so I manually turn off the O/D. Makes a big difference. I can easily maintain 70 MPH.

This is true. Also, all through the '90's, we wished for a 3.73 ratio as 3.54 was too tall and 4.10 was too short. Now that we have the wished for 3.73, folks think they want a 4.10 or some other ratio. When did the 3.42 ratio come onto the scene in the Cummins Rams?
