You would be unwise to visit those areas without 4WD tho we only used it occasionally on the dirt roads in.
But on the downside you have more gear to maintain on the truck and it adds weight which subtracts from payload. I've never needed it in the snow myself.

Even if you will never drive in snow, if you go out west, you will see roads that are marked 4x4 only. If you don't want to drive on those roads, and will stay in paved parks and campgrounds only, you will be fine without 4x4.
It really comes down to what kind of camper you are. There is no blanket right or wrong answer. Only right or wrong for you.
