5th wheel or TT?

I posted this earlier today in the FW forum and it was suggested I also post it here to hear what you all have to say.

We've been looking at the Sunset Trail 32rl TT and like it a lot. Then, we saw the FW Cruiser 305sk. We had not been thinking of a FW, but the asking price is only $4500 more than the TT. We are going to buy a F250 Diesel. Do you think we should go for the 5th wheel and if so, why? We like the outdoor kitchen and long sofa in the TT but others have suggested that the FW is so much easier to tow and we love the ceiling height and windows. We are still working so this will be for weekends and occasional week long trips. We'd like to be able to have room for another couple to stay with us. We'd like to stay under $40,000. We've never owned a trailer before but have used a family member's TT.

Go with the 5th wheel better quality and to make up for the lack of bed storage 5th wheels have huge basement storage. And with the pin weight, I have a F-250 diesel and pull a 41 footer 5W that weighs in at just under 13,000 pounds and has about a 2,400 pound pin weight and the truck is still pretty level when I'm towing.
  • We have a 30' TT and I tow a 35' Gooseneck trailer for the HS band. Yes the FW may be a but shorter overall when connected and the height inside is nice. But I like not having steps inside the trailer and unless you get a high profile FW the ceiling height in the front room is reduced. (Which may not be a problem).
On the FW side I do like the generally bigger water tanks and storage.
On the TT side I find that I am able to back into tighter spaces with the TT. When driving the Gooseneck I feel like I have to really swing the truck to get the trailer to start to move where I want it. I see this on spots that I have to enter at 90 degrees.
I have not noticed much difference in ride quality between the two. A well set up TT rides just as nice.
  • Just depends on what you need. We wanted the storage space in the back of the truck so a TT works best for us at this time.

We looked at the Sunset Trail 32rl but it was just a bit too long. It also didn't have a heated underbelly, which we need for winter camping. It is a very nice tt, though.
  • Had I done it correctly and bought the truck before the TT I would have purchased the same floorplan in a FW. Easier to tow and much easier to manage as far as weight distribution and balance of the load. Plus you get the same length of camper with less total rig length. That being said my TT tows like a dream and I am in no way considering trading it for a FW. Just would have done different up front.
