6.4 2nd UPDATE

Well, I'll be driving the truck home by Wednesday, probably. After two week and $3700.00 later, we still don't know anymore about the problem now, as we did the day I brought the truck in.

Fords latest suggestion to the ford garage was to replace the right side head gasket now, replace the horizontal egr cooler and the vertical egr cooler. This is not an absolute diagnosis to the problem, just what is being suggested by the Ford guru's. Total cost to me would be $4000 plus. The bill would be $8000.00 plus.

I told Ford garage to button it up. I'm not putting more money. Going to drive it home and sell it.

Stayed tuned, I'll be following up with a more detailed response from Ford to the garage.

The mechanic did pressure test the egr coolers and they tested fine. No indication of right side head gasket problems, but the higher up guru's at ford thought that might be a problem.

Oh well.

Good luck getting home and getting it sold. Hopefully it's still worth something? Just a lousy situation all around.
  • Not just Ford, but all of them...including foreign

"Highly Integrated" plus the over all complexity of today's vehicles
are worrisome to me...technologist all my life, so speak with knowledge
    on the matter

Buddy saved all her life...hubby laughs at this...just bought a C class
and he's keeping his Ford Ranger... Scared her so much when she 'tried'
to read the manual, about an inch thick. Hubby told her to take the
'free' class...and after her first session, came home to tell hubby
that there were over 100 computers in the lowest class MB...he continues
    to laugh over this.

Don't blame the dealers, nor any mechanic too much...today's vehicles
require a computer background. Even at that, the 'right' computer
background...controls and systems background are my preferred. Process
control and real time even better

My mechanic is GREAT, but lacks that background, so I've become one
of his helpers... :B Mainly discussing to get to a divide and conquer
position. He is a Master ASE on engines, trannies, AC/cooling and brakes.
He is much more than that, but those are his certificates on the wall

Had a few PM discussions over 'Highly Integrated' trailer brake controllers
and those two still don't understand how any IBC and Sway Control
system can affect ABS on the TV. Even less on how it can affect the
    engine and tranny

What am trying to get across is that when the OEM has control of EVERYTHING
on the vehicle...they get creative in pinching the penny

Meaning that a P2/P3 will have that design team working only on the
trailer brake control and the interface with the TV.

They CAN NOT touch the tranny computer, nor the ECU, etc. Maybe the
trailer brake controller that plugs into the TV's network port

Since there are so many inter-dependencies for the OP's vehicle, it
is almost impossible to diag it...add that in going bad...all of these
inter-dependencies has the chance (high) of taking other systems/components
down...they might still be just barely good for now...

Most of my auto electronics is no longer good enough to today's vehicles
and turn to my mechanic more and more. My hardware tools are still golden...

Yep, I`m staying far away from any new Ford diesels. I`de much rather get a bit less fuel mileage but have no mechanical issues and make it to my destination without worrying "will I make it".

    Good luck to you OP.

BTW, maybe you could stop by a Ram dealer on your way home, you`ll be much happier!

Some of these repair prices cover the cost of a replacement V10 in my last dually.

OP...may be a help in you decision...here is a man who makes his living off Powerstroke repairs...

    Buying a used 6.4 Powerstroke

I would highly recommend a newer Diesel with DEF or whatever you are comfortable with...I'm seriously afraid that this is a symptom of a much larger problem.

    Thanks!

  • Yep, my parents just got the bill for their latest Ford disgrace....$4000 for a HPOP. 2007 6.0 with 42,000 miles.

$8000 in less than 4 months........

    It's criminal.
  • Good luck getting it home. I'm pulling for your OP.
Once upon a time Ricatic found a dealer who didn't seem to helpful as to his problem with a 2011 6.7 BIG problem. The dealer ended up black balling Ricatic which voided his warranty period. He was out like 10-12k dollars for the repair.
Just a side note, he (Ricatic) bled blue on several boards. His wife even worked for the blue oval in Michigan no less :E
So much for loyalty... more so after it's on your dime.
Again good luck getting it home. At least the weather is better for travel.

On edit this was just the start of his battle with Ford if your having trouble sleeping tonight :W

Jeez, that's terrible. Just another example of modern day "mechanics" who can't diagnose a problem and just throw parts and money at it until they finally fix it or the owner gives up... At least you can finish your trip and get home now. Good luck and drive safe.

Thanks spoon, I don't really blame the garage too much. I think they tried as best as they could. What amazes me is this came directly from the Ford guru that's supposed to be the expert. They're guessing what the problem is at the consumers expense. What really bugs me is I'm about to take a hit on a nice truck and there might not be anything worst than a head gasket.

  • Can't say I blame you. I'd trade it in asap before it gives up the ghost.
