With the six diesels I've owned, last four being Cummins Rams, and the previous 5.7L Hemi powered 2500HD Ram and now the 5.4L F250, I only saw a 2~mpg difference on the interstate towing or empty between the diesels and gassers. The ones new enough to have a mpg display have been accurate within 1mpg. If I reset the mpg display at 60mph in the F250, it will read in the low 20's. Might be accurate at the time but will quickly average back out to around 17mpg. Where the diesels got much better mileage was around town empty. Where I averaged 13-14 with the gassers before I retired, I could get 18-19 with the diesels. Now that I'm retired, that's not in the equation. 10.5mpg towing verses 8.5mpg towing isn't enough to justify the diesel in my opinion.
