MPG for Dodge 5.7 hemi vs 6.4 hemi

Bought the 2015 Dodge 2500 6.4 HEMI crew cab and 8 foot bed. No specs on MPG at time we bought. Getting 16 mpg highway drive not towing and drops to 7 mpg towing Pulling a Heartland Elkridge 9500 lbs Wondered about the comparison to the 2500 5.7L HEMI. So far since being in December put on 6000 miles, mostly I-5 to Arizoana and Washington State back and forth
  • Interesting question. IIRC the 6.4 has MDS...something the 2500 5.7 Ram does not have.

    thanks!

  • Well we've got a 2010 Ram 2500, 5.7 Hemi, with 3;73 gears, and a topper shell--towing a 9000 lb. 27 ft. travel trailer. Empty mileage is 15 to 17 mpg in summer, at 70 mph, street tires, equal hills and flats. Towing over 14,000 miles in the Western U.S. I average 8.6 mpg at 60 mph. Winter gas drops mpg by 2-3 mpg with studded snow tires.
  • Thanks Found dealers are not much help seems I am in the ball park. My weight is quite a bit more..so seems I am doing ok. Wondered if the same truck only 4 x 2 and 6 foot bed would get any better gas milage...found they do sell those. Have been advised to use automatic not that new manual 10 speed ..in fact dealer sales said don't use at all. Cant understand why they even put it in the rig with the auto, 4 wheel and two haul seems it is covered..
  • I have a 2012 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi, 6-spd auto and 4:10 rear. If I'm going down hill with a tail wind, a full moon and all of the stars are aligned I'm lucky to get 16.5 mpg @ 65 mph. When towing I fall into the ever popular range of 8-10 mpg.

You will never find MPG ratings on vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) weighing more than 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight are classified as heavy-duty vehicles. Fuel economy regulations do not apply to these vehicles, so they are not tested.
  • With my 5.7l in the 2014 2500 I get about 14-16 unloaded and right about 10 towing. My TT is about 8,300 lbs loaded to go.
  • 16 highway unloaded is impressive. I've never seen over 12 highway unloaded on my 1500 with the HEMI 5.7, between 9 and 10 towing my tiny 20 ft trailer (3500#).

The tech guy at the dealership told me the first 1000 miles of how you drive will set my MPG for the rest of the time I own the truck. Well, almost every mile my truck has on it was spent towing, so maybe that explains terrible mpg even while not towing?
