I will give a readers digest short version of what happens
lower combustion temps = retarded injection timing ,less NOX, more soot ,more fuel needed for the same power output, more fuel used because of more frequent regens and no DEF.
higher combustion temps = advanced injection timing ,more NOX, less soot, less fuel needed for the same power, less fuel used because of less frequent regens , and DEF is needed
the SCR breaks the DEF down and it combines with the NOX to make nitrogen, water and CO2
spend a week with the EPA and engine manufactures and you will be bored out of your gourd
