7.3 Cam Position Sensor Part Number

Hopefully this is a simple easy question to answer that someone can verify easily. I seem to be having trouble doing it myself for some reason.

Just bought a 1996 Ford Powerstroke truck to haul my slide in camper with. I had asked the previous owner if it ever had the cam position sensor changed or if he ever had problems with it. He said he didn't know anything about it and never changed any sensors on the truck. So I went onto an auction site and bought a cam position sensor to keep in the glovebox, so that when I do finally have a problem with it, I'll be back on the road in no time.

Problem is, when I went to leave feedback this morning, I noticed that the one I bought had the years 1997-2003 advertised. I don't know why I didn't check that. I guess I just thought "that's what I need, and I know it looks like what I need, so let's go..."

Anyway, part number should be OEM. It is F7TZ-12K073-B.

Can anyone here help me in verifying that it will work on my truck? I know that the motor is a little different than later model years, but in all I know about these trucks, they didn't really change little things like this. I did a simple Internet search and with what I came up with, it looks like it will work for all years. I would just like to verify this with someone who may know for sure.

Thanks.
  • Go to this Ford Parts site Link enter your Vin # and it will show the correct parts for your truck.
  • I think your best bet is to GO to a Ford dealer and ask them. There is a good chance that they will know. :)
  • The CPS that you bought will work fine for you. The one that you have now is a light grey one that was installed in all 7.3 engines as part of the recall.
  • I was told by the service advisor that the recall was because if the sensor went out it would shut of the engine and all power would be lost, creating a dangerouse situation if you were on the highway or other

IMO this is very sage advice. I seem to recall there is quite a few various models types which are somewhat year dependent and just as you have seen from the recall comment from someone with an 02 you should get your information from current owners of the specific year of your truck. My 01 is subject to the recall mentioned, but I won't get it done since I'm still running my original, I have a spare and an one of those if it isn't broke don't try and break it. I paid the ridiculously high price for the IH part back in around 02 whereas now the latest ones are very reasonable from what I understand. Some lasted forever, some failed within a year or two and there wasn't a real rhyme or reason for all the issues.

  • When I was trying to repair my last Ford - the parts guy (20+ years experience) told me Ford had the most variable/different part types of all the manufacturers. It was hard to find the right part due to the constant redesign/changes.
  • If your truck is actually a 1996 then that part is not correct. Sensor you need will only fit 1994-1996. The part you ordered is for 97-03. Sorry.

What month was your truck made in 96? You could possibly have a 97 and don't know it.
